Remarks by H.E. Kiejoo
Kim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Democratic Republic of Congo at
the Launch of a New Malaria Medication
Kinshasa, September 18,
is my great honor to be a part of today’s ceremony. I am particularly moved
that we are here to tackle one of the most severe health challenges of humanity.
malaria is claiming a huge number of human lives. It also stunts educational and
other opportunities in life of children and the youth. It is distressing that
this country has the second-largest infected population in Africa.
top of humanitarian cost, socio-economic cost of preventing and treating the
disease is also posing a serious pressure on the already constrained resources.
All in all, we need concerted efforts of the public and private sectors
combined to fight this disease.
collective efforts of the international community are making a lot of
progresses. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 is guiding the international
efforts in this regard. Korea is strongly committed to this goal.
Korean government is contributing to the international efforts to deal with diseases
including malaria by introducing Air Ticket Solidarity Levy, a system of Global
Disease Eradication Fund.
am proud that KOICA, Korea International Cooperation Agency, is engaged with
the partners and stakeholders of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the international
community in promoting health and hygiene in this country. It has worked in
many parts of the country where people at risk, particularly children and
mothers, are in great need of help. Most notably, KOICA’s project has helped vulnerable
population in Bandundu, Kwango and Kisangani, to name just a few, to seek prevention
and treatment of malaria.
I sincerely hope that the new
medication will provide yet another effective cure and remedy in our common efforts
for saving human lives. Last but not least, I want to take this opportunity to
congratulate the inauguration of the new cabinet of this great country.
reassure you that the Korean government will remain a steadfast partner on the
path towards fulfilling development goals including promotion of public health in
you very much.
