The 2019 OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM) was held at the OECD headquarters in Paris from May 22 to May 24, under the theme “Harnessing Digital Transition for Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Challenges.” The Ministers shared their view that the digital transformation poses both opportunities and challenges, and stated that digital innovation should be utilized while maintaining human-centered principles.
As Vice-Chair, along with Canada, of the MCM under the Chairship of Slovakia, Korea was represented by Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, and participated in activities such as high-level panel discussionsand other sessions, including lead remarks attended by high-level delegates Yoo Myung-hee, Trade Minister at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; Lee Ho-seung, First Vice-Minister of the Economy and Finance; and Min WonKi, Second Vice-Minister of Science and ICT. In particular, Korea played a leading role as the Chair of the Digital Economic Policy Committee, led by Min Won Ki, in developing the “Recommendations on Artificial Intelligence,” one of the major achievements of the 2019 MCM.
