FRETILIN parliamentary member, David Diaz Ximenes is concerned that the situation of Timorese market is dominated by traders from China and that the market does not provide opportunity for East Timorese, which causes many young Timorese to leave for England and Ireland.
He explained that Parliament, Government and Civil Society often called for the state's debt problem, but forgot about the economic condition in the country which is increasingly dominated by Chinese traders. Even the traders from China are using tourist visa in doing business activities.
Therefore, the government should pay attention to this issue by exercising better control, and begin to educate Timorese people to run their own businesses.
On the same occasion, CNRT parliamentary member Domingos Lemos said the Ministry of Industry should be more cautious in granting business licenses. In addition, the government should continue to strive to prevent Chinese who come to Timor-Leste from using tourist visas to work.
The Acting Director General of Industrial and Environment Affairs, Domingos Guterres, said, "When we talk about the policy of granting business permission for Chinese business to do business in Timor-Leste, essentially, state regulations allow foreigners to do business in Timor- Leste if you have enough capital, but we also continue to try to motivate local merchants to continue developing their business. "
"Until now I have not found a case of abuse of resident permit, therefore, for members of parliament who feel they have evidence then please do report, thus we can jointly investigate and I also want to say that in addition to the rules that guarantee foreign traders, traders should also pay taxes to the government regularly, "said Mr. Domingos Guterres.
