By 2012, Seoul will have three more international schools for children of foreign residents, the Seoul city government announced yesterday.
 
Harrow School, a private secondary school in Britain, has been negotiating with the city government to open an international school in Banpo, southern Seoul, the city said.
 
“Harrow School has established international schools in Bangkok and Beijing and is interested in setting up another international school in Seoul,” said Jang Hwa-young, a city official.
 
The city plans to open the new international school by 2010. The city will also invite other foreign institutions to open branches in Gaepo, southern Seoul and inside the Digital Media City (DMC) in Sangam, western Seoul by 2012 and 2010. Foreigners and Koreans who have lived outside the country for more than five years are allowed to study at international schools.
 
The paucity of international schools has been a major concern of foreign residents in Seoul. As of December 2007, 5,822 students were enrolled at 21 international schools in the city, while 6,929 foreign school- aged children were registered at the city government. The city also said a Japanese school in Gaepo-dong will relocate to the DMC area by 2010.
