The Dokdo islands are again causing controversy in South Korea. KOIS, the Korean Overseas Information Service, has found approximately 7000 misnomer cases of the Dokdo Islands and the East Sea.
The Dokdo Islands are claimed by both South Korea and Japan while the East Sea is occasionally referred to as the Sea of Japan in some maps. Korea has had police forces on Dokdo to discourage Japanese citizens from trying to claim the island.
In addition, the two countries have had various stand offs in the East Sea over fishing rights.
KOIS detected naming errors in various European maps and in a US Congressional map.
Along with the Koreans Overseas Media Association, KOIS plans to begin a campaign to correct these misnomers.
Anybody who is interested in Korea are welcomed to participate in the campaign. They can report errors to www.okmedia.or.kr or to Korea.net.
Meanwhile, the KOIS will conduct a campaign overseas to make widely known the Korean national brand, Dynamic Korea, starting July 8 through Aug. 31. This campaign is the second undertaken, following the one last year.
