Republic of Korea and Republic of Peru Sign Agreement for Cooperation on Climate Change

1. On June 9, 2024, Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Javier González-Olaechea, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, signed the Agreement for Cooperation on Climate Change between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Peru at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul.

2. Recognizing the severe impacts of climate change which will intensify in the future, the two Ministers emphasized the urgent need to bolster climate action within this pivotal decade. The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to implementing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to keep the 1.5 ℃ goal within reach under the Paris Agreement.

3. This bilateral Agreement establishes a robust framework for comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in addressing climate change. It aims to enhance both countries' capacities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate impacts, supporting the transition to sustainable, low-carbon and resilient economies.

4. Based on this Agreement, the two countries are committed to enhancing substantive cooperation on climate change, including accelerating the low-carbon transition in energy, industry, transport, and agriculture, among other sectors, exchanging climate policies and technologies, and organizing capacity building activities. This Agreement provides an important framework for the implementation of greenhouse gas mitigation projects under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. This cooperation is expected to contribute significantly to achieving both countries’ NDCs and to strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change.  

5. By signing this Agreement, both countries have taken a significant stride forward in their shared mission to tackle climate change.
