Outcomes of the ROK-US Foreign Ministers' Meeting

1. Minister Song Min-soon had a meeting with U.S. Secretary 
of State, Condoleezza Rice on September 26 from 15:30 to 
16:00, on the sidelines of the 62nd Session of the UN General 
Assembly, for in-depth discussions on various issues of 
mutual interest including the inter-Korean Summit, the North 
Korean nuclear issue and the situation in the Middle East.

2. Minister Song explained our plans for the upcoming 
inter-Korean Summit, for which Secretary Rice expressed the 
U.S.'s support.  Minister Song and Secretary Rice agreed that 
the upcoming inter-Korean Summit will be an important occasion 
that will accelerate the progress of the Six-Party Talks process 
as well as that of discussions on establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

3. Minister Song and Secretary Rice agreed that it is important to reach an agreement on implementation 
plans for the next stage measures, including the disablement of North Korean nuclear facilities before the 
year-end, at the second session of the Sixth Round of the Six-Party Talks which will begin on September 
27 in Beijing, and agreed to continue close consultations to this end.

4. They also appreciated with satisfaction the successful development of the ROK-U.S. relations, and 
exchanged their views on ways to enhance cooperation between the ROK and the United States in the 
area of the stabilization and reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan and the ratification of the KORUS FTA.

5. They also agreed on the need for joint actions on the climate change issue.  In this regard, Secretary 
Rice thanked Minister Song for participating in the Major Economies Meeting on Energy Security and 
Climate Change (September 27-28, Washington DC). And, they agreed to further enhance cooperation in 
coping with  other global issues as well.
