1. Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan had a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Bernard
Kouchner on the afternoon of May 20.
2. In the telephone conversation, Minister Yu explained the outcome of the investigation into the cause
of the sinking of the Cheonan announced earlier in the day. With regard to the investigation outcome,
stressing the need for the international community to respond sternly to the North Korean attack, he
asked France to issue a statement of condemnation and extend other forms of support and cooperation
on our government’s position and measures.
3. In response, Minister Kouchner spoke of the French government’s plan to issue a statement of
condemnation shortly and its willingness to support the Korean government’s position and measures.
Also, he offered sympathy and consolation to the victims of the Cheonan incident and their bereaved
families.
