1. Two Korean officials are expected to be appointed as Chief of Division of the UNESCAP.
Mr. Chung Rae-Kwon, Ambassador for Climate Change of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade is expected to be appointed as Chief of the Environment and Development
Division, and Mr. Ha Dong-Woo, Chief of the Transport Infrastructure Section will be
appointed as Chief of the Transport Division.
2. ESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.
With a membership of 62 states, ESCAP is the most comprehensive of the United Nations
five regional commissions. As an inter-governmental organization in the Asia Pacific region
it plays a key role in enhancing economic, social, and development cooperation.
o The ESCAP Secretariat is composed of nine divisions. The Environment and Development
Division is in charge of green growth and the sustainable development of the Asia Pacific
region, and the Transport Division is in charge of the Asian Highway and Trans-Asian
Railway related activities which aim to enhance regional cooperation through the
establishment of an effective traffic network.
3. The appointment reflects the Korean government’s contribution to the economic and
social development of the Asia Pacific region as well as its tireless efforts to work in close
cooperation with the Korean Embassy in Thailand
