1. Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan was paid a courtesy call by Jim Webb, Chairman of the US Senate
Foreign Relation's Subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific Affairs who is on a visit to Korea, on May 31.
During the courtesy call, the two sides exchanged views on Korea-US cooperation with regard to the
Cheonan incident; development of the Korea-US strategic alliance; the KORUS FTA (Korea-US Free
Trade Agreement); and other matters of mutual interest.

2. Minister Yu took note of Chairman Webb’s active role in the development of Korea-US relations, in
the issuance of statements condemning North Korea and underscoring the importance of Korea-US
cooperation, and in the passage of a Senate resolution in relation to the Cheonan incident. He then
asked that Chairman Webb continue work with the US Congress to extend further support and
cooperation in this regard.

ο Noting with satisfaction the development of the bilateral alliance on the occasion of the 60th year since
the outbreak of the Korean War, Minister Yu requested support and cooperation of the US Congress for
the ratification of the KORUS FTA and further progress in strategic alliance between the two countries.

3. Chairman Webb reaffirmed the US Congress’ full trust in and support for the outcome of the
investigation and the Korean government’s countermeasures with respect to the Cheonan incident,
and voiced an intention to continue support and cooperation to the extent possible. Also, underlining
the importance and meaning of the Korea-US alliance, he stated that every effort will be exerted toward
further development of Korea-US ties on the occasion of the 60th year since the start of the Korean War,
and toward the ratification of the KORUS FTA.

4. Chairman Webb is visiting Korea on May 30-June 1 at the invitation of the Chairman of National
Assembly’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification. During his visit, he is scheduled
to pay courtesy calls on major government and National Assembly officials, and visit the War Memorial
of Korea to pay his respects to the 46 sailors killed in the sinking of the Cheonan.
