One Day to Go Before the Seoul Conference on Cyberspace 2013

1. The Seoul Conference on Cyberspace 2013 will be held at COEX on October 17-18 under the theme “Global Prosperity through an Open and Secure Cyberspace,” with around 1,600 people, including those from 87 countries and 18 international organizations, in attendance.

2. The Seoul Conference, the largest international meeting the ROK government holds this year, will be attended by a large number of high-level government officials, senior officials from regional and global organizations and private sector representatives.

o The Seoul Conference will be attended by 45 high-level officials, including Foreign Secretary William Jefferson Hague and Foreign Minister János Martonyi of Britain and Hungary, the first and second hosts of the Conference, and other foreign ministers and ICT ministers.

o Other participants include representatives from major regional and international organizations, including ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré, OECD Deputy Secretary-General Yves Leterme and Deputy Secretary-General for the European External Action Service Maciej Popowski.

3. The Seoul Conference will discuss key issues in cyberspace, such as rapidly increasing cyber attacks and hacking, and other various issues concerning cyberspace, including economy, society, security and global security.

4. At the Seoul Conference, which will consist of five plenary meetings and panel discussions on six agendas, minister-level representatives will deliver keynote speeches and experts from public and private organizations will hold in-depth discussions on cyber issues.

o In particular, during the panel discussions on six agendas – economic growth and development; social and cultural benefits; cyber security; cyber crime; international security; and capacity building – presentations and detailed discussions on the agendas will be held.

5. The Seoul Conference has helped further elevate the Conference’s international status, with participation by more countries in different regions and more high-level officials. The Seoul Conference is expected to lay the foundation for enhancing international cooperation in cyberspace.
