1. The Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Lee Kyung-soo and Chile’s Sub-Secretary of Foreign Relations Daniel Carvallo will hold the 6th High-level Policy Consultation between the Republic of Korea and Chile in Seoul on October 28.

º The meeting comes after the one between Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and his Chilean counterpart Alfredo Moreno held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in September. In the upcoming meeting, the two sides will review bilateral issues and discuss specific ways to work more closely together.

2. In the Policy Consultation, the two sides will review the progress in the implementation of the ROK-Chile FTA; discuss ways to work more closely together in a wide range of fields, including energy, resources, infrastructure, culture, science, technology and defense industry; and seek ways to support Korean companies’ bids to enter the Chilean market.

º The two sides, in particular, will discuss ways for their bilateral FTA, which marks its 10th year since its entry into force in April 2004, to contribute to promoting not only bilateral trade but also their overall relations.

º The two sides will also explore ways for all-out cooperation in new and renewable energy and tidal power generation, and exchange views on ways to work together in the mineral resources sector as not only trading but also development partners.

3. The two delegations will also discuss ways to support people-to-people exchanges, including early conclusion of bilateral agreements on the working holiday program and social security.

4. Chile is a long-standing friend of the ROK: It was the first South American country that endorsed the government of the Republic of Korea in 1949 and has expanded cooperation with the ROK in diverse fields since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962 based on shared universal values, such as democracy, market economy and human rights. Since the conclusion of the bilateral FTA and the establishment of the comprehensive cooperative relationship in 2004, the ties between the two countries have rapidly deepened and advanced.
