ROK and Germany Hold a Consultation on Multilateral Foreign Policy

1. The Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Shin Dong-ik met with Patricia Flor, Director-General for the UN at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, on July 23. In the meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of pending global issues, including the proposed reform of the UN Security Council, the Israel-Palestine crisis, issues concerning Syria, Iran and Ukraine, and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH-17.

◦ The delegation from the Republic of Korea explained the ROK government’s foreign policies, including those regarding the UN Security Council, human rights and development cooperation, as well as North Korea issues and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

2. Deputy Minister Shin and Director-General Flor affirmed that their two countries, as friends sharing such universal values as democracy, market economy and human rights, hold similar positions on international issues. They agreed to work more closely together at the UN and on other international stages.

◦ Director-General Flor emphasized stepping up cooperation in diverse sectors with major countries, such as the ROK, as an important part of Germany’s foreign policy.

3. At the bilateral summit talks in Berlin, Germany, on March 26, the two countries agreed to step up cooperation on multilateral and other international stages. And the consultation took place to seek specific ways for the foreign ministries of the ROK and Germany to work and coordinate together at the UN and in the field of multilateral diplomacy in accordance with the agreement.
