1. On the sidelines of the ASEAN-related foreign ministerial meetings 2016 in Vientiane, Laos, from July 24 to 26, Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se met bilaterally with Foreign Minister Lim Jock Seng of Brunei in a pull-aside on July 25. In their meeting, the two top diplomats exchanged views on the Republic of Korea-Brunei relations across the board, the North Korean nuclear issue and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

2. The two Ministers, taking note of the steady progress in the friendly and cooperative relations between their two countries across the board since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1984, agreed to work closely together in the full range of sectors, including political affairs and economy, as well as on the international stage in a bid to maintain the momentum of bilateral cooperation that had been built by the ROK President’s visit to Brunei in 2013 and King Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s state visit to the ROK in 2014.

3. Minister Yun, extending appreciation to Brunei for its efforts to implement UN Security Council resolutions, asked the Brunei government to cooperate further for the ASEAN Regional Forum and the East Asia Summit to send a clear message to North Korea.

° In response, Minister Lim mentioned that the international community will not tolerate North Korea’s nuclear threats and that Brunei is well aware of the ROK’s position and will work closely with the ROK.
