ROK Re-Elected to Serve on the ICAO Council for the 6th Consecutive Time

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport have announced that at the General Assembly session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) under way in Montreal, Canada, the Republic of Korea was re-elected to serve on the ICAO Council for the sixth consecutive time.

2. In the election for members of the ICAO Council Part III on October 4, local time, the ROK won support from 146 out of the 172 nations voting, the second largest number of votes the country has ever earned, and thereby being elected to the ICAO Council for the sixth consecutive time.

3. The ROK, since its first election to the Council in 2001, has worked hard on the Council, including by offering developing countries free aviation training, contributing to the Safety Fund, dispatching experts to the ICAO Secretariat, and developing and providing safety management softwares.

4. The ROK’s consecutive re-elections to the ICAO affirm the country’s status as a leading country in the international aviation sector.

° Going forward, the ROK will make utmost efforts to move smoothly forward with its policy designed to sharpen the international competitiveness of its aviation sector, including by strengthening the competitiveness of its flag carrier and making Incheon International Airport a hub airport in Northeast Asia.
