1. The Korean government conducted the 2024 Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT)’s annual joint Field Training Exercise (FTX) at the National 119 Rescue Headquarters in Daegu from Monday, November 18, to Wednesday, November 20.
2. Building on last year’s experience in dispatching the KDRT to respond to the earthquakes in Türkiye and the wildfires in Canada, this year’s exercise focused on preparing for actual situations by conducting trainings for △inter-agency joint tabletop exercises, △the rescue team’s 36 consecutive hours of dispatch, △the medical team’s mobile hospital deployment, △the secretariat’s disaster response capacity building, etc.
3. In the tabletop exercises held on Monday, November 18, Park Jonghan, Director-General for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assessed that the KDRT checked its preparedness to quickly deploy relief efforts upon arriving at the scene in the event of a large-scale overseas disaster, as part of this year’s FTX.
4. In accordance with 「The Overseas Emergency Relief Act」, the Korean government has dispatched the KDRT when a large-scale disaster occurred overseas. Assuming the occurrence of a large-scale disaster, this training examined the cooperative system among related organizations and the role of each organization throughout the entire processes, including △situation reporting and needs assessment in decision-making, and △the KDRT’s activities during deployment and post-deployment evaluation.
※ The training was attended by more than 150 people, including those from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Korea International Cooperation Agency, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Fire Agency, the National 119 Rescue Headquarters, the National Medical Center, and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, as well as private medical personnel.
5. In addition to the KDRT’s regular education and training, the Korean government will continue its efforts to improve the overseas emergency relief system.
