K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) Implementation

- 22 Countries(regions) eligible for K-ETA temporary exemption as of April 1, 2023 -

Following the implementation of K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) from September 1, 2021, nationals of countries/regions, who were eligible for visa-free entry, now need to obtain K-ETA approval in advance in order to board the flight or ship bound for the Republic of Korea. K-ETA authorization is generally valid for multiple trips over a period of 3 years (starting from July 3, 2023) or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.


 Expansion of K-ETA validity from 2 years → to 3 years

- The validity period of K-ETA will be expanded to 3 years for applicants who apply after 00 hours, July 3, 2023 (Korea Standard Time)

※ K-ETA approval received before July 3, 2023, will remain valid until its expiration date


 K-ETA requirement will be exempted for ages 17 years old and under, and 65 years old and above.

- Travelers who wish to receive benefits from K-ETA application, such as not having to submit an arrival card upon entry, may apply for K-ETA, and in this case, the application fee will be charged.

※ K-ETA approval received before July 3, 2023, will remain valid until its expiration date


 As an exception, if short-term travelers with non-profit purpose on the list of K-ETA required countries/regions choose their nationality on the K-ETA official website and encounter a pop-up page as 'You are a national of a country/region eligible for K-ETA temporary exemption', they are not required to apply for K-ETA.




□ K-ETA will be temporarily exempted to the 22 countries/regions listed below starting from April 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024, as part of a plan to support the revitalization of the tourism industry in relation to commemorating Visit Korea 「 Year (2023 ~ 2024)」.

- Europe (13) : Finland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, UK

- Asia (5) : Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, Singapore, Taiwan

- Americas (2) : Canada, US (including Guam)

- Oceania (2) : Australia, New Zealand


※ Kindly note, if a traveler who is eligible for K-ETA temporary exemption wants to apply for K-ETA to receive benefits such as not having to submit an arrival card upon entry, he/she may apply for K-ETA and pay the fee.


※ Previously approved K-ETA will remain valid until its expiry date and no refund for those who have already submitted the K-ETA application.

- Asia (12) : Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Thailand, Turkey, Bahrain, Brunei Darussalam, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait


- Americas (30) : Guatemala, Grenada, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Dominica, Mexico, Barbados, Bahamas, Venezuela, Brazil, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts-Nevis, Suriname, Haiti, Antigua and Barbuda, El Salvador, Uruguay, Jamaica, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Peru, Guyana,

● Persons who are nationals of K-ETA required countries, but are exempt from K-ETA

- Diplomatic or official passport holders

- VISA holders, Registered foreigners

- Dual nationality holders who have a valid Korean passport

- USFK service members (under SOFA) who enter for official purpose

- Aircraft and ship crew members (including shift seafarers)

- ABTC holders (except for USA and Canadian ABTC holders)

- UN passport holders (UNLP, LAISSEZ-PASSER)

- Transfer passengers (However, transfer passengers who need to go through immigration NEED K-ETA approval.)


 Persons who are nationals of K-ETA required countries, but obtained approval for K-ETA exemption from the Ministry of Justice in advance through the request of relevant organizations by submitting a list of names via official channel.

- Dependents of USFK members, civilian component under SOFA





□ Attention

 Assessment can take more than 72 hours depending on the situation (e.g., increased number of K-ETA applications, applicants’ circumstances, etc). → We recommend you to apply K-ETA 2 months before your departure date.


 Ithere are any changes to your personal information or you had your passport reissued after obtaining K-ETA approval, you must apply for K-ETA again regardless of the existing K-ETA approval’s validity.


 If your K-ETA application had been disapproved once, it will be of no use to apply again unless there is a special change in circumstances. In this case, please visit an overseas Korean diplomatic mission (Embassy or Consulate) and apply for a visa. Furthermore, please be aware that you could face disadvantages, such as entry ban, if you submit false information on your K-ETA application.


○ K-ETA is NOT a visa. K-ETA approval does not guarantee admission to the Republic of Korea. A Korea Immigration Service officer at a port of entry will have the final determination.


 Travelers to Korea, including Jeju, from countries that are required a K-ETA must hold a K-ETA by applying on the K-ETA website (or mobile app).




□ Information about K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization)

○ Following the implementation of K-ETA, nationals of 112 countries/regions who were eligible for visa-free entry now should apply for K-ETA for issuance of the boarding pass (flight or ship).



K-ETA authorization is generally valid for multiple trips (up to 90 days for Estonian Nationality per 1 trip) over a period of 3 years (starting from July 3, 2023) or until your passport expires, whichever comes first (Application fee-10,000 KRW/person).


○ Eligibility of K-ETA  Applicants for eligible countries of K-ETA according to the list above

- A person who doesn't have a valid Korean visa
- A person intending to enter the country for the purpose of tour, visiting relatives, participating in events or meetings, or business (other than profit-making activities)

- A person who plans a short-term stay (up to 90 days for Finnish/Estonian Nationality) for business or tourism purposes
※ For the Employment activities, you must obtain a separate visa that allows you to work and participate in employment activities in Korea.
※ Korean Resident Card holders (registered foreign residents) do not need to get a K-ETA.

- Recently, various private agency websites have been established to assist the K-ETA application, charging high processing fees. Additionally, the address of those sites (e.g. www.koreaeta.kr, www.koreaonlinevisa.com, www.etasouthkoreavisa.com) is similar to the official K-ETA website, and the information provided might not be accurate.


Therefore, please BE CAUTIOUS of those sites.
