(Daily News Thursday September 08-2010)
No need for referendum
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced in Parliament yesterday that the Supreme Court had determined that the 18th Amendment to the Constitution Bill was consistent with the Constitution and it does not need a referendum to become law.
The Speaker reading out the Supreme Court determination said the Bill needs a special majority of the House to be approved. The Bill was sent to the Supreme Court by President Mahinda Rajapaksa for determination as it was an urgent Bill,” he said.
