Loss of Nationality Report

When a South Korean citizen acquires foreign nationality, their South Korean nationality is automatically lost from the date of acquisition.
Koreans who have lost their nationality must report the loss of nationality to notify the Korean government.
The nationality loss report can only be submitted in person by the applicant or a relative within the fourth degree of kinship (an appointment is required).
Submission by mail is not accepted.

Note: You MUST bring the original U.S. passport and U.S. naturalization certificate (The original documents will be promptly returned to you after reviewing)
For the report, you must know your resident registration number(주민등록번호) or the exact registered permanent address(등록기준지 또는 구 본적) in Korea.
This information can be found in an old Korean passport or a family register. Please note that the consulate is unable to access this information.
1) (Form) Loss of nationality application (Revised May 15, 2018)
●One passport-sized photo (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm or 2 inches x 2 inches), taken within the last 6 months, to be attached to the form.
●The consulate cannot take the photo, so you must bring a printed photo.
●Registered Address: Refers to the address of the family registry or the registered address on the family relation certificate.
●Loss of Nationality Date: The date of U.S. naturalization.
●Signature: Please write your Korean name and sign in the designated area at the bottom of the form.

3) Original U.S. Passport and a Copy
4) Original U.S. Naturalization Certificate and a Copy
5) If the name on the U.S. Naturalization Certificate differs from the name on the Family Certificate:
● If your name was changed during the naturalization process, provide the original Name Change document (e.g., Petition for Name Change) and a copy.
● If your name was changed due to marriage, please provide the original marriage certificate and a copy.
● If the name change is noted on the back of your U.S. Naturalization Certificate, please submit the original and a copy of that page.
● If you do not have documents proving the name change, please complete the Certificate of identity (attached form) -> Signatures of two verifiers and copies of their IDs are required.
6) Family relationship certificate (detailed) and basic certificate (detailed) of the person who reported the loss of nationality 1 copy each (original issued within the last 3 months, disclosure of the last digit of the resident registration number)
● Note: You can also apply for these along with loss of nationality at time of visit. The fee is $1 per certificate(only cash or money order can be accepted). [Click here for certificate application guidelines]
● These certificates must be the original and issued within the last 3 months.
● For certificates, you must know your resident registration number(주민등록번호) or the exact registered permanent address(등록기준지 또는 구 본적) in Korea.

7) For Minor Children Who Acquired U.S. Citizenship Along with a Parent: Certification for Acquired Citizenship(수반취득확인서, A declaration and signature confirming the child acquired U.S. citizenship along with the parent)
Note: If the minor child acquired U.S. (or third-country) citizenship with a parent, the nationality loss report must be submitted along with the parent's report.
● Original and copy of the parent's U.S. Naturalization Certificate
● Original and copy of the child’s U.S. Passport and the parent's U.S. Passport
8) If you have the most recent Korean passport, please submit the original and a copy
9) No Fees Required
10) Return envelope and stamp for the result (Size does not matter).
● Estimated Processing Time: Approximately 6 months.
● The report can be submitted by the applicant or by a family member up to the 4th degree of kinship. (In that case, you have to prove your family relations with an applicant over certificates)
● During the review process by the Ministry of Justice, additional documents may be requested if deemed necessary.
