<General Information / Terms>

*Acquiring U.S. citizenship doesn't mean renouncing Korean citizenship has been submitted automatically. One must file a renunciation of citizenship at the Consulate or related department in person.

등록기준지(본적): Registered Address in Korea (Usually, it follows the father's registered address, and it is determined during birth registration) *This doesn't mean where one lived before leaving Korea or one's current address in Korea.

호주: Head of the Family (It varies depending on the family; it can be oneself, father, grandfather, etc.)

주민등록번호: Resident Number (YYMMDD-*******) 7 * digits include specific number assigned to individuals. 

*If individuals don't remember or don't have a resident number, they must state their birthday(YYMMDD) instead.

Types of certificates

• ■가족관계증명서 Family Relationship Certificate

• ■기본증명서 Basic Certificate (equivalent to Birth Certificate)

• ■혼인관계증명서 Marriage Certificate

• ■제적등본 (equivalent to family relationship, basic, marriage certificate before 2008)

가족관계증명서, 기본증명서, 혼인관계증명서 are for individuals who have renounced their Korean citizenship after 2008 or are yet to file a renunciation claim.

Individuals must know their registered address in Korea or their resident number to apply for the certificates.

제적등본 is for individuals who have renounced their Korean citizenship before 2008.

Individuals must know the registered address in Korea and the name of the head of the family.

Procedure

A. An overseas mission receives an application for a family relationship certificate from civil petitioners

B. Send the application to the Office of Court Administration(located in Korea) via secured e-mail

C. The Office of Court Administration issues the relevant family relationship certificate and sends it to the overseas mission via authorized e-mail

D. The mission distributes issued certificates to civil petitioners

Notes

In accordance with the Supreme Court Family Relations Registration Regulations No. 356 and 404, the family relationship register (family relationship certificate, basic certificate, marriage relationship certificate, etc.) can be issued only in Korean.
