Loss of Korean Nationality(Naturalized U.S. Citizen)

Act 15

A national of the Republic of Korea who voluntarily acquires the nationality of a foreign country shall lose the nationality of the Republic of Korea at the time when he or she acquires the foreign nationality.

Nationality

Act 16

A person who has lost his or her nationality of the Republic of Korea shall report the loss of nationality to the Minister of Justice.

only if your name is different on Certificate of Identification and U.S. passport/Certificate of Naturalization due to a name change, marriage, etc.

Certificate of Naturalizationoriginal & copy

Your Korean nationality becomes invalid as of the date on your Certificate of Naturalization. Therefore, we need the original document to verify the date you acquired U.S. citizenship.

*Note: Certificate of Identification, Certificate of Family Relations, Marriage Certificate, etc., must be issued within the last 3 months

2 regular USPS postage stamps (return envelope for the outcome of your application will be provided by the consulate)


□ Important Notes

If a person who acquired U.S. citizenship however did not report Loss of Nationality has died, immediate family or legal representative also need to provide an original and a copy of Death Certificate in addition.


Processing time for Ministry of Justice response: 3-6 months or more; contact Ministry of Justice Nationality Division for details.


If an immediate family member is reporting/submitting on behalf of the applicant, a valid U.S. passport, permanent resident card, or citizenship certificate (original & copy) is also required to prove the representative's current nationality.
