On March 1, 1919, Koreans declared their independence in seven cities in different parts of the country. The declaration of independence was read aloud in front of throngs of Koreans, drawn together by a shared dream of independence.
This year marks the Centennial of the March First Independence Movement of Korea.
Taking this opportunity, the Presidential Commission on the Centennial Anniversary of the March First Independence Movement and the Korean Provisional Government came up with the "March First Declaration of Independence" written in much accessible language to modern readers and translated it into English.
We hope you find this English version of the Declaration of Independence helpful in better understanding the spirit and objectives of the March First Independence Movement.
Thank you.
