1. Ambassador to Geneva Choi Kyong-lim of the Republic of Korea was unanimously elected to chair the Government Group of the International Labour Organization (ILO) during the 2017-2018 term. The election was held at the Government Group meeting on June 16 during the 106th session of the ILO International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
° Ambassador Cho chaired the UN Human Rights Council in 2016 and has been serving as chairperson of the Council for Trade in Goods (CTG) of the World Trade Organization since April.
※ The ILO, founded in 1919, is a tripartite consultative mechanism among representatives of governments, workers and employers. This international organization with 187 member states sets international labor standards and helps countries create quality jobs.
※ Ambassador Choi will chair the Government Group until the end of the International Labour Conference session in June 2018.
2. The election of Ambassador Choi as chairperson of the ILO Government Group came after the election of the ROK on June 12 as a member of the ILO Governing Body from 2017 till 2020, which marked the eighth consecutive time for the ROK. Such accomplishments are expected to help greatly enhance the ROK’s standing in labor diplomacy.
※ Former Ambassador to Geneva Chung Eui-yong worked as chairperson of the ILO Governing Body in 2003.
3. The ILO Government Group recommends candidates as chairpersons of the ILO Governing Body, and recommends candidates as or appoints members of the Government Group; and mediates among workers, employers and governments within the ILO.
