[HRC 60] - Item 4 - General Debate, Statement by Ambassador Si-jin Song

Statement by the Republic of Korea

The 60th Session of the Human Rights Council

Item 4, General Debate

Geneva, 23 September 2025

Thank you, Mr. President,

The Republic of Korea remains deeply concerned about the report of the lack of accountability on the part of Belarus for human rights violations. The reported intimidation against lawyers is of particular concern, as it undermines the fair-trial rights of individuals detained on political grounds. We call on Belarus to conduct effective and independent investigations into all alleged human rights violations.

Regarding Syria, my delegation values the continued efforts by Syria to address the grave human rights violations committed under the previous regime. Taking note of Syria’s commitment to reject division and to fulfil the human rights of its people in all their diversity, we encourage Syria to continue its endeavors to ensure justice and uphold human rights in accordance with international standards.

Last but not least, we express concern at the reports regarding Nicaragua that its legal reforms, including the adoption of electoral laws restricting citizen participation, undermine political pluralism and the rule of law. In the same vein, my delegation is of the view that Nicaragua’s decision to withdraw from the Human Rights Council is deeply regrettable. We sincerely hope for its full engagement with the international human rights mechanisms.

I thank you. /End/
