Ambassador Yeocheol Yoon attended a conference held by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to commemorate the 2nd World Female Maritime Day on 18th May 2023. During the conference, a signing ceremony was held for an agreement between the Republic of Korea and the IMO to enhance the capacity of women in the maritime industry.
The agreement, signed between Ambassador Yoon and Secretary-General Kitack Lim, aims to provide education and training opportunities in maritime fields such as maritime digitalisation and marine environmental protection to female mariners from ten countries worldwide. This initiative, funded through Official Development Assistance (ODA), aims to support women's entry into the maritime field.
* A total of 4 billion won in support is planned for the period from 2023 to 2026(4 years).
The event was attended by approximately 300 conference participants and was broadcasted live worldwide through the IMO's video conferencing system, allowing us to promote our country's contributions to the international community.
In his speech, Ambassador Yoon expressed gratitude for the contributions of women in the maritime field and expressed hope that this agreement would not only promote women's entry into the maritime industry but also serve as a catalyst for similar support programmes in other member countries.
The Embassy will continue to show interest and make efforts towards women's entry into the maritime field. We will also ensure ongoing attention to the successful implementation of the agreement signed with the IMO.
