President Yoon Suk Yeol Meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom: 20 May 2023

On the 20th of May, President Yoon Suk Yeol had a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima. The two leaders exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations and practical cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.

 

President Yoon said he was pleased to have this first summit with Prime Minister Sunak and asked for the Prime Minister’s support in expanding co-operation on nuclear power and the countries’ digital partnership as well as in strengthening collaboration on cybersecurity.

 

In response, the Prime Minister expressed his hopes to cooperate with the Republic of Korea on defence, semiconductors and energy, especially nuclear power.

 

In the year in which we celebrate the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, he called for a “comprehensive and creative partnership” based on the ROK-UK Bilateral Framework for Closer Cooperation.

 

The Prime Minister said the United Kingdom wants the Republic of Korea to be its most important partner in the Asia-Pacific region and has proposed a detailed plan and agreement for enhancing our co-operation at pace.

 

The President agreed to work intensively with the UK in the security and economic sectors, emphasizing that the Republic of Korea values solidarity with its allies including the G7.
