[Science] Women Scientists & Engineers of the Year

Women Scientists & Engineers of the Year 


The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) announced their choice of the “Women Scientists of the Year” on December 1, 2010.

Amid increasing women’s participation in various sectors of the Korean society including the fields of science and technology (S&T), MEST and NRF started to present the “Woman Scientist & Engineer of the Year” Award from 2001 to the female scientists and engineers who have made significant contributions to the S&T development of Korea, with a view to boosting their morale as well as encouraging more talented women workforce to pursue S&T-related careers.

The Award is given to one person in each area of Science, Engineering, and Promotion. Each award winner receives the Education, Science and Technology Minister’s Commendation with KRW 10 million in prize.

On the Science front, this year’s award goes to Professor Seong-eun Kim at Sejong University. She was recognized for her contribution to the advancement in national research of the characteristics of interstellar medium and the formation of stars through observing the distribution of atomic gas in Magellanic Galaxy in high resolution.

In the Engineering sector, Senior Researcher Yong-hyeon Shin at the Korea Research Institute of Standards & Science (KRISS) is the award winner, who has been dedicating herself to the research of vacuum technology over the past 25 years, helping to raise the vacuum technology and related industry development to the next level at home and abroad.

On the Promotion front, the award goes to Professor Ji-yeong Kim at Kyung Hee University, who has played a key role in elevating the status of women scientists and engineers in Korea by serving as the chairpersons at several major women scientists’ associations.
