Welcome to the website of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.
Located in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, my embassy covers Korea’s relationship with the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Republic of Liberia and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, which is often called ‘Giant of Africa.’ With the world’s 11th largest oil reserves and the 10th largest natural gas reserves, Nigeria is also richly endowed with a variety of mineral resources such as gold and iron ore. Nigeria is a cultural powerhouse which boasts Afrobeat music genre and the Nollywood films. Nigeria is also strong in sports as its national football team, the Super Eagles, finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria has a huge potential for growth with 70% of its population being under the age of 30.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1980, Korea and Nigeria have deepened cooperation in many areas such as politics, economy and culture. Korea and Nigeria have maintained close high-level exchanges. In 2022, then Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari visited Korea. Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in September, 2023. Korean companies are actively exploring Nigerian market with focus on energy and construction sectors. The amount of contracts Korean companies won in Nigeria accounts for more than half of the total amount of contracts that Korean companies won in Africa. Korea and Nigeria have pursued to boost trade between the two countries leveraging the respective comparative advantages, that is Korea’s consumer goods and Nigeria’s raw materials such as oil and gas. The trade volume between the two countries amounted to 1.63 billon US dollars in 2023. Nigeria is the fifth largest trading partner of Korea in Africa. In addition, the Korean Culture Center(KCCN) in Abuja, which is Korea’s first KCC in Africa, serves as a bridge between the two countries by providing Nigerians with opportunities to experience Korean culture and by facilitating people-to-people exchanges.
The Korean embassy in Abuja will do its best to further develop bilateral relations between Korea and Nigeria in various areas. At the same time, it will exert its utmost efforts to protect Korean nationals staying in Nigeria amid the worsening security situation.
The Korean embassy in Abuja will focus on fostering partnership with Sierra Leone and Liberia with whom Korea has maintained friendly relationship since the 1960s. especially in the field of economic and agricultural cooperation. The utmost effort to protect Korean nationals in Sierra Leone and Liberia will be exerted as well.
Thank you.
