2021 NZ K-Pop Contest

 

Kia ora, K-pop fans in New Zealand!

The K-Pop World Festival is finally back this year offline!

#3. NZ Final Round: 28 August 2021, K-Culture Festival @ Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington

 

You can enter the PERFORMANCE or VOCAL category as a team or an individual by submitting your K-Pop videos online. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only the winners of the dance category will be selected to progress to the World K-Pop Preliminary round.

Please read the details below thoroughly as there are special requirements for this year:

 

 Type of Performance: Vocal / Dance performance

 * Due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the World K-Pop Festival this year only accepts dance performances to participate.

 

 How to Enter

1. Upload your K-Pop Dance or Vocal video to YouTube. (2 videos for dance / 1 video for vocal)

Your videos must:

- Clearly show your performance under well-lit conditions

- Record your voice distinctly

- Editing songs, special effect techniques or cross-cutting video is NOT allowed

- Include tight, full shots of your performance

※ Please position your camera at the front and centre of your team to clearly show the overall performance and choreography

 Online Audition Guidelines

1. Performance Category

a. Enter as an individual or team.

b. Maximum size of a team is eight, and should not exceed the number of members of the covered K-POP group. (e.g. Team covering BTS can have up to seven people.)

c. Submit TWO dance videos

Record two videos which show you dancing to K-Pop songs:

1) ANY K-POP SONG you wish to perform

2) ANY BTS SONGS

✅For the Second video, make sure all your members participate in the dance. There is no limit to the number of members for the second song!✅

The song of choice at the NZ Preliminary should be the same exact song that you will be performing at the World Finals.

 

2. Vocal Category

a. Enter as an individual or team.

b. Team sizes are as follows:

(1) Team with backup dancers

- Maximum TWO backup dancers are allowed.

- The number of team members (including the backup dancers) for vocal category should not exceed the number of members of the covered K-POP group.

 (e.g. A team covering BTS can be organised either as 6 vocals with one backup dancer or as 5 vocals with two backup dancers.)

(2) Team without backup dancers

- There is no maximum number of team members for vocal category; however, they should not exceed the number of members of the covered K-POP group.

(e.g. Team covering BTS can have up to seven people.)

c. Only ONE K-pop song (Original song in Korean) is allowed for vocal category.

d. Record your voice(s) using instrumental audio/accompaniment without the original singer’s voice. DO NOT record your voice over the original singer.

  

 Judging

1. NZ Preliminary Round will be judged from online video entries.

2. NZ Final Round will be judged by the panels at the venue.

3. Results of the NZ Final Round will be announced at the K-culture Festival.

4. Winners from the NZ Finalists in dance category will be selected to progress to the World Preliminary Round.

※ The World Finals in Changwon, Korea may be cancelled due to COVID-19.

 

 Eligibility

1. The competition is open to New Zealand residents and citizens.

2. Korean nationals are not eligible.

3. Persons who have both parents that are or were Korean nationals are not eligible.

4. Contestants must not be restricted from travelling overseas to be available to visit Korea for the Final Round (the exact date to be confirmed later) in Korea.


 Important Dates & Times

1. NZ Preliminary Round Deadline: Videos and entries by 16 July 2021

2. NZ Preliminary Round Result Announcement: mid-July

3. NZ Final Round: 28 August 2021, K-Culture Festival @ Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington

4. World Preliminary Round & World Finals: TBA

※ The World Finals in Changwon, Korea may be cancelled due to COVID-19.


 Travel Assistance for NZ Finals

The Embassy will make a contribution to assist with travel costs for NZ finalists who are travelling from outside of the Wellington region for the NZ Finals. This assistance is limited to domestic travel within New Zealand only. The final details of the contribution are subject to the funding from the Foreign Ministry in Korea. Finalists will be informed of the details after the preliminary round result announcement.
