Ambassador Oh congratulates 2023 GKS Scholarship Awardees from T&T

DATE
2023-08-24

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea takes great pleasure in announcing the selection of two outstanding students, Andrea Lyder and Kalesia Harrypersad, as recipients of the prestigious 2023 Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Program. Starting this September, the GKS program will enable them to pursue their Master's Degrees in diverse fields, contributing to international academic exchange and cooperation.

On August 24th, 2023, a ceremony was held at the Korean Embassy whereby Ambassador Dongil Oh extended a warm welcome to the scholars and personally congratulated them on their well-deserved success. Ambassador Oh took this opportunity to impart valuable insights and guidance, paving the way for a rewarding stay in Korea.

Andrea, an aspiring scholar, will embark on her journey towards a Master's degree in Energy and Chemical Engineering at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Her pursuit of advanced knowledge in this crucial field is set to propel the realms of energy and chemical engineering forward. Kalesia, equally dedicated to her educational aspirations, will engage in a Master's degree program in Education, specializing in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, at Keimyung University in Daegu. Her commitment to bolstering cross-cultural understanding and language education is truly commendable. Alongside their academic pursuits, both scholars are driven to immerse themselves in Korean culture and student life, fostering comprehensive experiences.

The scholarship program offers assistance that goes beyond the academic curriculum. Before beginning their two-year degree programs, Andrea and Kalesia will engage in a Korean Language Training for one year, affording them a chance to observe, appreciate, and simultaneously embrace the Korean way of life. This initial phase serves as a notable stepping stone, enabling them to encompass the Korean lifestyle and adapt to their fresh surroundings, thus forming a robust bedrock for their academic endeavors.

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), offered by Korea's National Institute for International Education (NIIED), provides an unparalleled opportunity for students around the world to pursue their undergraduate or graduate degrees in Korea, including one year of intensive Korean language study.

The GKS program continues to play a pivotal role in fostering academic exchange between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. These connections are instrumental in shaping future-oriented cooperation and mutually beneficial exchanges between our two nations in the years to come.
