Dr. Chinsung Chung, a sociology professor at Seoul National University, was elected as a member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) for the term 2018-2021 at the elections held at United Nations Head Quarters on June 22, 2017.
※ The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) is the body of 18 independent experts that monitors the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by its State parties.
Given her diverse experience with UN Human Rights mechanisms, including serving on the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee (2008-2013) and the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, as a member (2004-2006) and alternate member (2000-2004), Dr. Chung will greatly contribute to the activities of the CERD for the next four years as the first member from the Republic of Korea to serve on the Committee.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea actively advocated on behalf of Dr. Chinsung Chung for her election to the CERD and will continue to support human rights experts from the Republic of Korea serving on UN Human Rights mechanisms.
