On 1 May 2018, Ambassador Ham Sang-wook, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, attended the International Day of Vesak event held in the UN General Assembly Hall and delivered remarks.
Buddhist monks from Korea also attended the event and monks from Korea, China, and Japan invocated blessings.
The Day of Vesak commemorates the birth of the Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment, and his passing away. In 1999, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution for the international recognition of the Day of Vesak, and, since then, the International Day of Vesak event has been held annually at UN headquarters.
