Korea has been elected to the UNESCO Executive Board on November 15th, during the 42nd UNESCO General Conference (7-22 November) in Paris. With this, Korea will serve as a member of the Executive Board for the ninth term since its first assumption in 1987, and fifth consecutive term since 2007.

Along with Korea, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Australia were also elected as the member in the Asia-Pacific group.

"As an executive board member of UNESCO for the next four years, our government will actively participate in the discussions at UNESCO, and make active efforts to help achieve its goal of international peace and common prosperity for mankind," an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Moreover, Korea is provided with an opportunity to serve as a World Heritage Committee member until the year 2027. During the 24th session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (22-23 November), Korea was elected to the World Heritage Committee, marking the fourth service as a committee member, following 1997, 2005, and 2013.
