Statement of the Republic of Korea

Thank you Madam President,

The ROK welcomes advances made in the promotion and protection of human rights in Tunisia, including the access to key international human rights instruments and withdrawal of reservations to the CEDAW. The ROK recommends vigorous efforts by Tunisia to ensure effective implementation of those instruments, including human rights training of law enforcement personnel and further steps to promote gender equality.

The ROK also welcomes the release of political prisoners and efforts to seek accountability for the past human rights violations and provide redress to their victims. The ROK believes accountability for human rights violations is vital for the promotion and protection of human rights and recommends Tunisia to continue its efforts in this regard.

The ROK also recommends Tunisia to further its efforts to effectively prohibit torture and other ill-treatment and to ensure the independence of judiciary and the respect for due process.

Lastly, we recommend Tunisia to continue its cooperation with the UN human rights mechanisms, as part of Tunisia’s ongoing efforts in promoting human rights.
